I cannot do carryon only! While I have enough room in my suitcase to cram what I need, I would never be able to lift it over my head. I have two carryon sized bags which each weigh about 7 pounds empty. I split my weight between them, 17 carryon and 18 checked (total 35 pounds). If I were to try to fit it all in one, that one bag would be 28 pounds and that is too heavy for me. 17 pounds to lift up over my head, no problem.
I follow so many of your recommendations. I have also used welcome pick-ups in France and recently in Istanbul. They were wonderful. We were in Paris for Christmas last year and scheduled a photo shoot with Katie Donnelley. I will cherish those photos forever. We had my mother with us and included her in the shoot. Truly magical.
