I, too, love writing postcards to loved ones back home while we travel! My daughter has now taken on this ritual and sends postcards to her friends and teachers.

One of the things we always search for are ornaments for our Christmas tree. We try to find unique ones that remind us of a special memory from our trip. Once home, I write the year of travel on the ornament, and it is so fun to unpack them year after year and reminisce!

When the day comes that my daughter will have her own family traditions, I plan on giving her the ones where she traveled so that she can tell the story of where she has been and what she did.

I collect early 20th century vintage postcards (that I purchase mostly on eBay) from the places I’ve traveled to, particularly the things I’ve seen. Then I rotate displays in my office of the postcards by location (Paris, London, Spain, etc). It’s my own beautiful travel gallery that brings me much joy!

I began sending postcards from my travels when my grandmother was still alive and living with my aunt and uncle but essentially bedridden. I realized how very important mail was for her. I sent to her, my parents, in-laws, my moms best friend who has MS, young nieces and our god daughter and her sister. Many of these folks are now gone but I’ve continued. When our hod daughter’s sister was in college she sent me a picture of her closet door… it had every postcard I had sent through the years on it. So nice to see that my small gesture had a big impact!
